20 Over Speeding Ticket in Indiana: What to Know About Cost and Points

Updated October 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte

If you searched how much is a 20 over speeding ticket in indiana, the answer on an ordinary road is a judgment of no more than $35.50 if you admit it on time, plus court costs. The ticket falls in the 16 to 25 mph tier, so it is a Class C infraction that adds 4 points to your BMV record. In a school zone or work site, the same speed is a Class B infraction with 6 points.

Key Facts

  • Tier: 20 over sits in the 16 to 25 mph band, worth 4 points. See the point tiers.
  • Ordinary road cost: no more than a $35.50 judgment on a timely admission, plus court costs. See the cost.
  • Zones: Class B and 6 points in a school zone or work site. See zones.
  • Not reckless by itself: reckless driving depends on conduct, not a number. See reckless driving.
  • DSP credit: 4 points, once every three years; the citation stays. See the DSP credit.

Where 20 Over Falls in the Point Tiers

The BMV’s point table in 140 IAC 1-4.5-10 sorts speeding by how far over the limit you were. Going 20 over lands in the middle band, 16 to 25 mph over. On an ordinary road, that band is worth 4 points.

The edges matter. At 15 over, the ticket drops to the 2-point band.

At 26 over, it moves to the 6-point band for “over 25” mph. If the ticket does not show the speed, the rule assigns 2 points.

What 20 Over Means on Indiana Limits

The speed itself depends on the posted limit. Here is the math on limits listed in IC 9-21-5-2:

Limit in state lawWhere it appliesSpeed at 20 over
15 mphAlleys35 mph
30 mphUrban districts50 mph
55 mphGeneral limit, unless another applies75 mph
65 mphInterstate 46585 mph
70 mphInterstates outside urbanized areas of 50,000 or more90 mph

The 4-point band covers a range, not one speed. On a 55 mph road, it runs from 71 to 80 mph. On a 70 mph interstate, it runs from 86 to 95 mph.

Each row is the same ticket class and the same 4 points on an ordinary road. Local limits, such as school zones under IC 9-21-5-6, can be lower. The limit posted where you were stopped is the one that counts.

How Much Is a 20 Over Speeding Ticket in Indiana?

On an ordinary road, the money does not depend on the 20. Under IC 34-28-5-4, a Class C moving violation has these limits:

  • Admit on or before the appearance date: court costs and a judgment of no more than $35.50.
  • Contest and lose: the cap can rise to $250.50 or $500 if a court in that county found prior moving violations in the past 5 years.
  • Class C ceiling: $500.

Court costs come on top. The Indiana Trial Court Fee Manual lists $139 in statutory infraction costs, or $167 where the sheriff’s fee is collected.

A judge may add some fees, so ask your county court for the exact amount. Our cost guide explains each factor.

20 Over in a School Zone or Work Site

Zones change both the class and the points. In a school zone or work site, 16 to 25 over is worth 6 points, not 4.

  • School zone. Under IC 9-21-5-6, a school zone limit is at least 20 mph, applies in the school’s immediate vicinity when children are present, and must be signed. Going over it is a Class B infraction, up to $1,000. At a 20 mph school zone limit, 20 over is 40 mph.
  • Work site. Under IC 9-21-5-11, the limit is at least 10 mph below the normal limit. A first violation is a Class B infraction with a fine of at least $300. With one prior in 3 years, it is at least $500, and with two or more, $1,000.

The $35.50 cap is for Class C cases, so it does not cover these tickets. See our school zone and work zone guide.

Steps for a 20 over speeding ticket in Indiana, from the 16 to 25 mph tier to points and the DSP credit

Is 20 Over Reckless Driving?

Not by itself. Indiana’s reckless driving law, IC 9-21-8-52, has no mph figure. It covers speed that is unreasonable “under the circumstances” and endangers others or blocks traffic, plus several other acts.

Reckless driving is a separate charge that a prosecutor files when the facts fit that law. Speed in the 16 to 25 band is handled as a Class C infraction unless that happens.

If reckless driving were charged, its base level is a Class C misdemeanor, with up to 60 days, a $500 fine and 6 points. Our guide to when speeding becomes reckless driving explains how the charge is decided.

What 4 Points Do to Your Record

The 4 points count toward your active total for two years. The BMV points page says points stay active for two years from the conviction date. The violation stays on your record after that.

Your active total is what the BMV watches. Under 140 IAC 1-4.5-4, 14 to 18 active points bring a warning notice.

At 20 or more within 24 months, a suspension starts at one month. The BMV may also require a hearing after three moving offenses within 12 months. For example, a driver with 12 active points who adds a 4-point ticket has 16, which is in the warning range.

Using the DSP Credit Against 4 Points

The Driver Safety Program credit matches this ticket’s points. The BMV DSP page says finishing an approved DSP applies a 4-point credit. So a driver whose only active points are from one 20 over ticket would have 0 after the credit.

The credit has limits. It “may only be applied once every three years,” and completion “will not remove a citation from your driver history.”

Searches for a defensive driving class lead to the same place. Indiana’s credit comes only from a Driver Safety Program on the BMV’s approved list.

The BMV sets a minimum of four hours for every approved course and a $55 price ceiling. Separately, IC 9-30-3-12(d) allows any court to suspend one-half of each court cost once a DSP is completed.

Deferral for a 20 Over Ticket

Some prosecutors offer a deferral program under IC 34-28-5-1. You sign an agreement, pay a $70 clerk fee and the prosecutor’s user fees, and meet the terms. Then the court dismisses the case, and it may not be refiled.

Not every county has to offer it, and it does not apply to commercial motor vehicle offenses. Ask the prosecutor’s office whether it runs a program.

Your Steps After a 20 Over Ticket

These steps use only official sources:

  1. Read the ticket. The Indiana State Police say it should include directions to pay or contest.
  2. Check the location. A school zone or work site means Class B and 6 points.
  3. Note the appearance date. The $35.50 cap depends on admitting by that date.
  4. Ask the county. Payments go to the county where the ticket was issued.
  5. Check your record. The Viewable Driver Record is free on myBMV.

Two Tickets in 12 Months

A second ticket can bring a BMV order, no matter the points. Under IC 9-30-3-12, two traffic judgments or convictions for moving violations within 12 months require a BMV-ordered DSP.

You have 90 days from the notice, or your driving privileges are suspended. See BMV-ordered DSP.

CDL Holders and 20 Over

In a commercial vehicle, federal rules treat 20 over as serious for CDL holders. Under 49 CFR 383.51, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit is a “serious traffic violation.” A second conviction in a separate incident within 3 years brings a 60-day disqualification, and a third brings 120 days.

In a personal vehicle, the conviction counts toward this only if it leads to a revocation, cancellation or suspension of the license or driving privileges. 49 CFR 384.226 also bars states from deferring or masking a CDL holder’s conviction. See our CDL speeding guide.

What We Found on the Official Pages

On the official pages we checked on October 26, 2026, the BMV point rule, 140 IAC 1-4.5-10, listed “16-25 MPH in excess of limit” at 4 points. It listed school zone and work site speeding at 6 points for the same band.

The cost rules we read set caps by plea timing, prior findings and class. We found no official “typical” amount for a 20 over ticket. The work site statute set its first two amounts as minimums, using the words “at least.”

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Each item comes from Indiana law, a BMV rule or federal rules:

  • Expecting a bigger fine for 20 over than 10 over. The cap does not change with speed on an ordinary road.
  • Using ordinary-road points in a zone. School zones and work sites add 2 points to each band.
  • Treating $300 as a work zone ceiling. It is the first-offense minimum.
  • Assuming 20 over is reckless driving. The statute has no speed figure.
  • Thinking the DSP clears the ticket. It offsets 4 points, but the citation stays.
  • Counting on deferral with a CDL. Federal rules bar masking a CDL holder’s conviction.

How Requirements Can Vary

Indiana’s point rules, the 4-point credit and the BMV’s Driver Safety Program order come from state law and BMV rules, and they apply statewide. What you must do still depends on whether you take the course by choice, because of a BMV notice, or under a court order. A court order sets its own deadline and proof steps.

Laws, fees and court practice can change. Check your BMV notice, your court order and the Indiana BMV website for current rules before you enroll or file anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points is 20 over in Indiana?

On an ordinary road, it is 4 points, because 20 over falls in the 16 to 25 mph band. In a school zone or work site, it is 6 points.

How much is 20 over on an ordinary Indiana road?

A timely admission keeps the judgment at $35.50 or less. Statutory court costs of $139, or $167 with the sheriff’s fee, are added. Your county court can confirm the bill.

Is 20 over a misdemeanor in Indiana?

No. On an ordinary road, it is a Class C infraction, which is not a crime. In a school zone or work site, it is a Class B infraction.

Can 20 over lead to a license suspension?

One ticket alone does not reach the 20-point suspension level. But 4 points add to your active total, and two moving-violation judgments within 12 months bring a BMV-ordered DSP.

Will the DSP cancel out a 20 over ticket?

It can offset the 4 points in your active total, once every three years. The ticket stays on your driver history.

Does 20 over count against a CDL?

In a commercial vehicle, yes: 15 mph or more over is a serious traffic violation under federal rules. In a personal vehicle, it counts only if the conviction leads to a license suspension. Two such convictions in separate incidents within 3 years bring a 60-day disqualification.

Where do I pay a 20 over ticket?

Payment goes to the county court named on your ticket, following its directions. State Police posts cannot accept it.

What if I was going 26 over instead?

Then the ticket moves to the “over 25” band, worth 6 points on an ordinary road. It is still a Class C infraction.

Conclusion

A 20 over ticket on an ordinary Indiana road is a Class C infraction with 4 points and a capped judgment plus court costs. In a school zone or work site, it is Class B with 6 points.

To offset 4 active points, see Driving Logic’s online Indiana Driver Safety Program. If your course is court-ordered, confirm that the order permits an online option.
