How to Earn Safe Driving Points in Virginia (And Why the DIC Gives You 5)

Updated October 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte

You earn Virginia safe driving points in two ways: 1 point for each full calendar year of clean driving with a valid Virginia license, and 5 points for an eligible Driver Improvement Clinic, once every 24 months. You can hold no more than 5 safe points at a time. Code § 46.2-498 describes the clinic benefit as five demerit points subtracted from your point total.

Key Facts

  • Clean-year point: 1 for each full calendar year with no violations or suspensions, posted in early April. See a clean calendar year.
  • Clinic points: 5 for an eligible completion, once every 24 months. See the clinic.
  • Limit: you can hold at most 5 safe driving points. See the 5-point limit.
  • Who qualifies: voluntary and DMV-ordered adults yes; court-ordered only if the court says so. See who gets clinic points.
  • The conviction stays: safe points change your total, not your conviction history. See what safe points do not do.

Two Ways to Earn Virginia Safe Driving Points

DMV’s Points System page names two sources of safe driving points. One rewards time. The other rewards a course.

  • Time: a full calendar year of clean driving earns 1 point.
  • A course: an eligible Driver Improvement Clinic earns 5 points.

Both count toward the same limit of 5. Our guide to the safe driving points balance explains how these credits net against demerit points.

Way 1: A Clean Calendar Year

Code § 46.2-494 awards one safe driving point “for each calendar year of safe driving.” The year counts only if your record shows no suspension, revocation, conviction or finding of not innocent for it.

DMV states the same test in plain words. You must hold a valid Virginia license and drive “without any violations or suspensions” for the full calendar year.

The point does not arrive on January 1. DMV says yearly safe points are awarded “in early April of each year for the previous calendar year.” So a clean 2026 would show up as a credit in early April 2027.

A few facts follow from these rules:

  • Whole years only. A partial year does not earn a partial point.
  • One violation spoils the year. A conviction for an offense in that year means no credit for it.
  • No action needed. You do not apply for the yearly point. DMV adds it.

Way 2: The Driver Improvement Clinic

The second way takes a course and comes with more rules. The Driver Improvement Clinic (DIC) is Virginia’s official course, and DMV says it teaches defensive driving techniques. It lasts 8 hours, and online, those 8 hours include the final test.

DMV’s Driver Improvement page sets the price limit and the credit:

  • Price: a clinic may charge no more than $100.
  • Format: online with a DMV-licensed online provider, or in person.
  • Credit: you may be awarded 5 safe driving points, once every 24 months.

The provider reports your completion to DMV within 24 hours, according to DMV form DIC 551. The same form says the online provider gives you a DIC 552B certificate.

Why the DIC Gives You 5

The number comes from the Code. Code § 46.2-498 says a driver who completes a clinic “shall have five demerit points subtracted from his total accumulation of demerit points.”

DMV describes the same benefit as 5 safe driving points. The two descriptions meet in one place: your point total improves by 5.

What if you have fewer than 5 demerit points? The Code says “a reduction in demerit points and/or the award of safe driving points will be made.”

The same section lets drivers attend by choice. Any person with a valid license to drive in Virginia may apply to attend “whether or not he has accumulated demerit points.”

Who Gets Clinic Points

Not every completion earns the 5 points. The reason you attend decides it.

Two cases need a closer look.

Court orders. Code § 46.2-505 says the court decides if you receive safe driving points. Without the court’s notice, DMV awards none. DMV’s Driver Improvement Clinics page says to give the clinic the court’s documents before DMV can award points.

Teens. Under Code § 46.2-334.01, a required clinic for a driver under 18 earns no safe points. A parent or guardian may attend that clinic and receive the point benefit.

DMV’s under-18 page adds that a teen who attends by choice receives 5 safe driving points.

Points on a DMV Order

A DMV order can still earn you points if you are 18 or older. The catch is the deadline. DMV’s notice gives you 90 days to finish the clinic.

If you miss it, DMV suspends your license until you complete the clinic. That rule comes from Code § 46.2-503. It does not apply to people who attend by choice.

DMV may allow more time in a narrow set of cases. Out-of-state college students, and military members or dependents stationed outside Virginia, may get an extension where no approved clinic is offered.

Online or In Person: The Same Credit

The format does not change the credit. An online clinic and an in-person clinic both count, as long as the provider is licensed by DMV.

The test rules differ by format:

  • Online: the final test is taken with the same online provider. There is no paper test, and it can be taken once per business day.
  • In person: the final test is taken in person.
  • Identity: online, your ID is checked during the course and before the test.

A court may or may not accept an online certificate. If a court sent you, ask the court first. Our online vs. in-person guide compares the two.

Tell the Provider Your Reason

The provider records why you came, and that choice controls the credit. DMV’s reasons page lists four codes:

  • COU: a court sent you.
  • DMV: DMV sent you.
  • VOL: you chose to attend.
  • INS: you want an insurance discount. DMV says no safe driving points are awarded for this code.

You must state your reason at sign-up and show a government photo ID. Pick the reason that matches your real situation.

Points or Insurance, Not Both

One completion gives one benefit. Code § 46.2-498 lets you take the point benefit or an insurance premium reduction. You may take the clinic again by choice for the other benefit one year after you finish.

The discount depends on your insurer. Under Code § 38.2-2217, an insurer may give a 2-year discount to a driver 54 or younger who attends by choice. Our insurance discount guide covers the details.

How the Credit Helps Your Total

Safe points matter because DMV can use them against demerit points. Code § 46.2-494 lets DMV “apply these points to offset an equivalent number of demerit points.”

Here is simple math. A driver with 10 demerit points who earns 5 safe points through a clinic has a lower total than before. Demerit points from each offense still count for 2 years from the offense date.

DMV acts when a driver’s total reaches set levels. Our Virginia DMV points system guide lists each one.

The 24-Month Window

The clinic credit has a clock of its own. DMV says the 5 points come “once every 24 months.” The Code says the benefit is given no more than once in a two-year period.

Before you enroll for points, find the date of your last clinic. If fewer than 24 months have passed since you received the point benefit, a new clinic will not add another 5.

The 5-Point Limit

Code § 46.2-494 says no person may hold more than five safe driving points. DMV puts it as a highest balance of 5.

So timing matters. A driver who already holds 5 safe points gains no new credit from a clean year. That same driver gains no extra safe points from a clinic, either.

What Safe Points Do Not Do

Safe points improve your total. They do not touch your conviction history:

  • The conviction stays. DMV lists how long each conviction stays on the record.
  • The ticket stays. A clinic does not undo a court’s finding.
  • Insurance points stay separate. DMV says insurance company points are not related to DMV demerit points.

What We Found on the Official Pages

On the DMV pages we checked on October 27, 2026, the Points System page still described the yearly point and the early April award. The Driver Improvement page still offered 5 safe driving points once every 24 months.

The reasons page still listed the COU, DMV, VOL and INS codes. It still said no safe points are awarded for INS.

Common Mistakes

Each item below comes from the Code of Virginia or a DMV page:

  • Waiting for the point on New Year’s Day. DMV awards it in early April.
  • Picking the insurance reason and expecting points. The INS code earns none.
  • Skipping the court paper. Without the court’s notice, DMV awards no points for a court-ordered clinic.
  • Taking a second clinic within 24 months for more points. The credit comes once every 24 months.
  • Expecting a teen’s required clinic to earn points. It does not, though a parent may attend for the benefit.
  • Going past the limit. No one may hold more than 5 safe points.

How Requirements Can Vary

Virginia’s point rules, safe driving points and DMV clinic orders come from the Code of Virginia and DMV rules, and they apply statewide. What you must do still depends on whether you take the clinic by choice, because of a DMV notice, or under a court order. A court order sets its own deadline and proof steps.

Laws, fees and court practice can change. Check your DMV notice, your court order and the Virginia DMV website for current rules before you enroll or file anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many safe driving points can I earn in a year?

A clean calendar year earns 1 point. An eligible clinic can add 5 more, once every 24 months. Your total still stops at 5.

When does DMV add the yearly point?

DMV adds it in early April for the calendar year before. The year must have no violations or suspensions, and you must hold a valid Virginia license.

Does a DMV-ordered clinic give safe driving points?

Yes, if you are 18 or older. Under 18, a required clinic gives no safe driving points.

Does a court-ordered clinic give points?

Only if the court says so. Give the clinic the court’s documents so DMV can act on them.

Can I get points and an insurance discount from one clinic?

No. You choose one benefit. You may take the clinic again by choice for the other benefit one year after you finish.

Does an online clinic earn the same points?

Yes. A clinic from a DMV-licensed online provider earns the same credit as an in-person clinic. The rules on who gets points do not change with the format.

Do safe driving points remove a ticket?

No. They improve your point total, but the conviction stays on your record for its listed period.

Conclusion

Virginia safe driving points come from clean calendar years and from an eligible Driver Improvement Clinic, with a limit of 5. Tell the provider your true reason, and check whether a court order controls your points.

If you qualify for the clinic credit, you can take the Virginia Driver Improvement Course. If a court ordered your clinic, ask the court whether it accepts an online course.
