Arizona Defensive Driving School Cost: What to Expect

Updated October 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte

Arizona defensive driving school cost depends on the court on your ticket, because the total adds a court diversion fee, a $24 state fee, a $45 state surcharge and the school’s own fee. In our review of the Arizona Supreme Court’s county fee pages on October 24, 2026, court fees ran from $70 to $250, so the subtotal before the school fee ran from $139 to $319. There is no single statewide price.

Key Facts

What’s in the Arizona Defensive Driving School Cost?

The Arizona Supreme Court’s Cost to Attend School page explains the math. The total cost to attend is the sum of four amounts:

  • Court diversion fee: set by each court.
  • State fee: $24 at every court listed for October 2026.
  • State surcharge: $45 at every court listed for October 2026.
  • School fee: set by the certified school you choose.

The first three are public. State law, ARS 28-3395, tells the Supreme Court to make public each court’s diversion fee and the total cost to attend in each court. That is why the county pages exist.

The school fee is the only part that changes from school to school. The county pages show “Contact School” in that column. The court’s Defensive Driving Schools page says all fees are explained on the school’s website before you register.

Other charges can apply in some cases. The Cost to Attend page names notary fees and collection fees as examples. Ask your court or school about them before you sign up.

Cost by County: Our October 2026 Review

We read every county page on the Arizona Supreme Court site on October 24, 2026. The fees shown were effective October 1, 2026. The pages listed 170 court rows across all 15 counties.

For the numbers below, we left out two juvenile and superior court rows. We also left out two rows whose listed subtotal did not match their own fees. That left 166 adult courts.

CountyCourtsCourt fee rangeSubtotal before school fee
Apache7$110 to $200$179 to $269
Cochise11$100 to $150$169 to $219

Yavapai13$110 to $180$179 to $249
Yuma7$120 to $200$189 to $269

A few patterns stand out:

  • The lowest court fee was $70, at Safford Justice, Pima Justice and Guadalupe Municipal.
  • The highest was $250, at La Paz Justice.
  • Most courts fell between $110 and $150. That band covered 116 of the 166 courts, about 70%.
  • $150 was the most common fee, listed at 37 courts.
  • All 26 Maricopa County justice courts charged $110, for a $179 subtotal.

Remember to add the school fee to every subtotal in this table.

How We Did This Review

We opened each of the 15 county pages linked from the Cost to Attend School page. We copied every court’s fee row and added up the court fee, state fee and surcharge ourselves. Our totals matched the listed subtotals on 168 of the 170 rows.

The two rows that did not match were both in Navajo County. If your ticket is from Kayenta Justice Court or Holbrook Municipal Court, call the court to confirm your amount.

Juvenile Courts

The county pages also list two juvenile and superior court rows. Maricopa Juvenile showed a $50 court fee, for a $119 subtotal.

Apache County Superior/Juvenile showed an $85 court fee, for a $154 subtotal. We left these out of the adult ranges above.

Cost in Arizona’s Largest Cities

In big cities, a ticket may go to a city court or a justice court. Here is what the county pages listed for some of the largest city courts:

City courtCourt feeSubtotal before school fee
Phoenix Municipal$145$214
Tucson City Municipal$150$219
Mesa Municipal$150$219
Chandler Municipal$150$219
Gilbert Municipal$150$219
Glendale Municipal$145$214
Scottsdale Municipal$154$223
Tempe Municipal$145$214
Peoria Municipal$162$231
Flagstaff Municipal$125$194
Yuma Municipal$175$244

The court on your citation sets your fee, not the city you live in. A ticket from a justice court can cost a different amount than one from the city court nearby.

How Much Is Defensive Driving School in Arizona for You?

To find your own number, start with your citation. It names the court that handles your case. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open the Cost to Attend School page at azcourts.gov/drive.
  2. Choose your county. Each county has its own page.
  3. Find your court by name or court number.
  4. Note the subtotal. It already adds the court fee, state fee and surcharge.
  5. Add the school fee. The school shows it on its website before you register.

Here is a worked example. Say your ticket is from Phoenix Municipal Court.

The Maricopa County page lists a $145 court fee, plus the $24 state fee and the $45 surcharge. Your subtotal is $214, and your total is $214 plus the school’s fee.

Now say your ticket came from a Maricopa County justice court instead. Those courts listed a $110 court fee, so the subtotal drops to $179. Same county, different court, a $35 difference before the school fee.

The pages show fees for citations issued on or after October 1, 2026. If your ticket is older, the county pages say to contact the court on your citation for the correct fee.

Five steps to find your exact Arizona defensive driving school cost on the court's county pages

When Fees Change

The court diversion fee may change in April and October each year. The Cost to Attend page says so directly. An old price from a forum or a past year may no longer be right.

This is one reason the date on your citation matters. The county pages tie each fee list to an effective date. Use the list that matches your ticket, or ask the court.

What Missing the Deadline Can Cost

The class only helps if you finish in time. The rule is at least 7 days before your court date. If you miss it, you may lose the chance at dismissal and face your court date instead.

Some courts let certified schools grant extensions for them. The court’s Court Approved Extensions list names those courts. Within 7 days of your court date, only the court can grant more time.

Cost for Out-of-State Drivers

If you live outside Arizona but got an Arizona ticket, the same fee rules apply. Your court still sets the diversion fee, and the state fee and surcharge stay the same. The FAQ says you can take the class online or return to Arizona for a classroom class.

Paying for the Class

You pay the school, not the court website. The court FAQ says some schools take registration by phone with prepayment. Others collect payment at class.

The FAQ also says most schools accept only money orders or cashier’s checks. Payment rules vary, so confirm what your school accepts before you register.

Refunds are limited. The FAQ says there is no refund once the course has started. If you have not started, contact the school about its refund rules.

Is It Worth the Cost?

Only you can decide, but the program’s results are clear. When an eligible driver finishes, the citation is dismissed and no points are added. The court FAQ also says your insurance rate should not go up because of that ticket.

Some courts also explain the effect on the fine. For example, Avondale City Court says you will not have to pay a fine for a charge dismissed through the class. Check your own court’s page or call the court for its rules.

Keep in mind that the class can dismiss only one ticket. It cannot reduce points you already have.

Ways to Avoid Paying More Than You Need To

These tips come from the program’s own rules:

  • Check eligibility first. The school runs a court database check when you register.
  • Use a certified school. A class from an uncertified site cannot get your ticket dismissed.
  • Finish on time. Missing the 7-day deadline can leave you paying for a class that does not help.
  • Read the school’s fee page. Compare school fees before you pay.
  • Do not start, then switch. Fees are not refunded once the course starts.

How Requirements Can Vary

Arizona’s defensive driving rules are set by state law and the Arizona Supreme Court, but each court handles its own cases. The total cost includes a court diversion fee that each court sets, so the price depends on the court on your ticket.

Extension allowances also differ by court, from 14 to 60 days on the Supreme Court’s list. If a judge orders in-person attendance, you must take a classroom course.

Court fees can change in April and October each year. Check the Arizona Supreme Court Defensive Driving Program and the court on your citation for current rules before you register.
