How to Take the Virginia Driver Improvement Course Online

Updated October 2026 · Reviewed by Billy Forte

To take the Virginia driver improvement course online, choose a DMV-licensed online provider, tell it why you are attending, and complete the 8-hour Driver Improvement Clinic (DIC), including the final test. You will need a government-issued photo ID, and you can take the online test once per business day. When you pass, the provider reports to DMV and sends your DIC 552B certificate within 24 hours.

Key Facts

  • Choosing a provider: find a DMV-licensed online provider in DMV’s clinic search. See step 2.
  • At sign-up: state your reason and show a government-issued photo ID. See step 3.
  • The course: 8 hours, with ID checks and the final test inside. See step 4.
  • The test: online, same provider, once per business day. See step 5.
  • Court orders: give the clinic the court’s paper for points and tell the court you finished. See step 7.

What You Need Before You Start

Gather a few things before you enroll. Each one comes from a DMV rule:

  • A government-issued photo ID. The DMV reasons page says to show one when you sign up.
  • Your reason for attending. It can be a court order, a DMV order, safe driving points or an insurance discount.
  • Your notice or order. It tells you your deadline.
  • A court paper, if a court sent you. You need it to get safe driving points.
  • Computer skills. DMV says “you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.”

The process has seven steps, from your paperwork to proof of completion. Steps 1 to 6 apply to every online student. Step 7 is only for court-ordered drivers.

Step 1: Read Your Notice or Order

Start with the paper that sent you, if there is one. With a DMV order, the deadline is 90 days. Past that point, your license stays suspended until the clinic is done.

A court order sets its own terms. Check whether it allows an online clinic. If you hold a CDL and must attend, stop here: you need the commercial clinic, and an online clinic does not meet that rule.

Step 2: Choose a DMV-Licensed Online Provider

Only a DMV-licensed online provider can give you the online clinic. Use the DMV Driver Training Schools and Clinics search and pick the Online Clinic filter.

Write down the provider’s name once you choose. DMV only records which provider you used after you pass.

Step 3: Enroll and State Your Reason

Tell the provider why you are taking the clinic. DMV says: “Let the clinic provider know your reason for attending the clinic.” Then show your government-issued photo ID.

Pick the right reason. DMV notes: “If you have not been to court, you are not court directed.”

Step 4: Work Through the 8 Hours

The online course has at least 8 hours of instruction, and those hours include the final test. Your ID will be checked along the way. The DMV online clinic page says you must “verify identification throughout the course.”

The lessons follow Code of Virginia § 46.2-490. Topics include work zone safety and motorcycle awareness.

Distracted driving, aggressive driving, and alcohol and drug abuse are on the list too. The DIC also teaches defensive driving techniques, which DMV says can help you avoid and prevent crashes.

You must finish every part of the course. The provider agreement says the course must be completed in its entirety before a certificate is issued.

Step 5: Take the Online Final Test

Your ID is checked again before the test. Then you take the test online with the same provider you registered with. DMV says “No paper testing is allowed.”

You may take the test only once per business day. If you do not pass, plan your next try for another business day. Our final test guide explains the test rules.

Step 6: Get Your Certificate

After you pass, the provider has two duties under the DMV online provider agreement:

  • To DMV: it reports your completion within 24 hours of the completion date.
  • To you: it sends an electronic DIC 552B certificate within 24 hours.

Save your DIC 552B in a safe place. Our certificate guide explains how to use it.

Step 7: Close Out a Court Order

Court-ordered drivers have one more job. Under Code of Virginia § 46.2-505, you must tell the court whether you completed the clinic. Not completing it may be punished as contempt of court.

The provider’s report to DMV does not do this for you. Our guide on submitting your certificate covers proof to the court.

Which Reason to Pick at Sign-Up

Your reason changes what DMV does with your completion. This table follows the DMV reasons page.

Reason you giveWhat to have readyWhat happens with points
Court-directedThe court’s paper, if it awards pointsPoints only if the court says so (never under 18)
DMV-required, 18 or olderYour DMV notice5 safe driving points
DMV-required, under 18Your DMV noticeNo safe driving points
VoluntaryYour photo ID5 safe driving points
Insurance discountYour photo ID, and a talk with your insurerNo safe driving points

The insurance reason has limits. Under § 38.2-2217, an insurer may give a 2-year discount to a voluntary driver 54 or younger. You get the discount or the points, not both, once in 2 years.

After You Finish

DMV adds the point benefit to an eligible record. The DMV Driver Improvement page says you “may be awarded 5 safe driving points, once every 24 months.”

The law calls this five demerit points subtracted from your total. For example, a driver with 8 demerit points who earns the benefit drops to a total of 3. Your safe point balance can never go above +5.

To see your record, use DMV’s “Log on to See Your Point Balance” service. The ticket itself stays on your record. The clinic lowers the point total; it does not take a conviction off.

If You Are Taking It for Insurance

Call your insurer before step 3. Under Code of Virginia § 38.2-2217, an insurer may offer a clinic discount, but it does not have to. The law sets no amount.

Keep these rules in mind:

  • Age. The clinic discount is for drivers 54 or younger.
  • Voluntary only. Drivers sent by a court or DMV do not qualify.
  • Length. The discount runs for 2 years.
  • No points. An insurance-only completion earns no safe driving points.

You may later want the benefit you did not pick. Code of Virginia § 46.2-498 lets you attend again for the other one, one year after you finished.

Age Rules That Change the Steps

Younger drivers follow the same seven steps, with a few changes in what happens after:

  • Under 18 and ordered to attend. The online format meets the DMV order, but no safe driving points are awarded.
  • Under 18 by choice. A voluntary clinic can earn 5 safe driving points.
  • A parent or guardian. A parent of a driver under 18 may attend and get the point benefit.
  • Ages 18 and 19. DMV requires a clinic after a single demerit-point conviction, or after a seat belt or child restraint violation.

A Short Checklist After You Finish

Use this list once the test is behind you:

  • Save the DIC 552B. Keep a copy where you can find it.
  • Note the date. The point benefit or discount counts only once in 2 years from this date.
  • Check your record. DMV’s “Log on to See Your Point Balance” service shows your points.
  • Tell the court. If a court ordered the clinic, report back as § 46.2-505 requires.

Timing Tips From the Rules

Two rules shape your schedule:

  • The 90-day window. A DMV order must be met within 90 days.
  • The test limit. One test try per business day.

Together, they mean you should start well before your deadline. Out-of-state college students and military members or dependents stationed outside Virginia may get more time.

DMV grants that only where no approved clinic is offered. Our guide on how long the clinic takes has more on timing.

When Online Is Not the Right Choice

Three cases call for a check first:

A court order that may not allow online. DMV says: “Your court may or may not accept the certificate of completion.” Ask the court clerk if the order is unclear.

A CDL requirement. DMV says an online clinic “will not meet the requirements of a commercial driver improvement clinic.” See the DMV commercial clinic page for that course.

A wish to learn in a classroom. Eight-hour classroom sessions are offered at sites around the state. In person, the final test is taken in person, not online.

What We Found on the Official Pages

On the DMV pages we checked on October 27, 2026, the sign-up rules were on the reasons page. It listed four reasons and the photo ID rule.

The online clinic page held the test and ID rules. The 24-hour duties for reporting and the DIC 552B appeared only in form DIC 551, the provider agreement. The DMV clinics page also listed a toll-free number for clinic concerns: 1-877-885-5790.

What to have ready before you take the Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic online

Common Mistakes When Taking It Online

Each item breaks an official rule or skips a required step:

  • Choosing the wrong reason. “Court directed” only applies if you have been to court.
  • Forgetting the court paper. Without it, a court-directed driver gets no safe driving points.
  • Starting close to the deadline. A failed test means waiting a business day.
  • Testing with another provider. The test must be with the one you registered with.
  • Assuming the provider tells the court. You must tell the court yourself.
  • Not keeping a note of your provider. DMV only records it once you pass.

How Requirements Can Vary

Virginia’s point rules, safe driving points and DMV clinic orders come from the Code of Virginia and DMV rules, and they apply statewide. What you must do still depends on whether you take the clinic by choice, because of a DMV notice, or under a court order. A court order sets its own deadline and proof steps.

Laws, fees and court practice can change. Check your DMV notice, your court order and the Virginia DMV website for current rules before you enroll or file anything.
